For this Sunday Snapshots I am taking you back to Europe! However, it is still keeping within my water theme that I did not mean to do… and still don’t mean to. When I was studying in France, I planned my dream trip to Greece. I have wanted to go to Greece since I was like a tiny kid when I first read child-friendly Greek mythology stories. I was OBSESSED. I found Greek mythology so fascinating. This turned into me watching Disney’s Hercules way too many times, having to deal with my sisters complaints during long car rides, as well as signing up for Classical Civ. 100 – basically Greek Mythology for fun. Literally, I didn’t get credit for it, except for 1 hour because I only signed up for the lecture. I had already met the general ed. requirements but really wanted to take the class. I am really selling myself as a cool person…
Anywho, one day before I was to fly to Greece, Iceland decided to ruin all my plans. Yep, this was back in 2010 when that stupid Enkjdsfngkjhfiuejdoe (not real name) volcano erupted and disrupted millions of travelers. As a result, my flights from Paris to Athens was cancelled. Needless to say I was pretttttty upset. Luckily, the trains were still working so my study abroad friends Caroline and Erin suggested we go to Belgium so we don’t waste our spring break. We decided to head to Brussels for a couple days and took a day trip to Bruges!
Bruges is an hour train ride away from Brussels and is so much more than that Colin Farrell “In Bruges” movie. Bruges has been around since the Bronze Age and is known as the “Venice of the North” due to its copious amount of canals. The canals may be smaller than those in Amsterdam, but they still hold quite a bit of charm! I mean, how do you not look at the above picture and think of a Disney movie?! We walked around the city for a bit and headed to a beer tour, because when in Belgium, you must drink the beer! While it wasn’t Greece, I am still thankful for my trip filled with beer, chocolate, waffles, and fries.
