I seem to like themes when it comes to #SundaySnapshots, first it was places in the US, now it seems I am gravitating towards water! This time I am taking you halfway around the world again to beautiful southern France!
As you all know, I am obsessed love France….like a lot. It was the first country I ever visit and will always have a special place in my heart. When I was teaching in Lyon and friend and I decided to go to Morocco via way of Marseille. Marseille had way cheaper flights to Fez than Lyon did at the time, so it made sense to us to take the train to marseille and then fly to Morocco. On our way back from Morocco, we decided to spend a few days in Marseille, as we both had never been.
We ended up CouchSurfing (sorry Dad!) to save money and ended up with one of the best hosts ever – Anthony! He had plans to hike up the calanques of cassis and graciously invited us to come along! I am pretty sure he regretted that decision, as I only had chucks and my friend had toms and there was some climbing and slipping involved. This is where I found out I was a big wimp and don’t like heights or climbing rocks. I complained A LOT, but the views were SO worth it.
Calanques are steep-walled inlets of water found in the Mediterranean. You cannot go to Marseille without visiting the calanques, and my favorite are definitely the ones of cassis! You can get there by land or boat, but the climb is not for the faint of heart. However I saw young kids and the elderly making this climb; I chalked it up to the type of shoes I had and that I wasn’t a local. (The kids and elderly were locals.) That is my story and I am sticking to it! But despite my complaining and the tough trek up there will never, ever forget that day/ I have never seen anything like it in all my travels and I would do it again.
